Anna Badkhen's work exposes the world’s iniquities by honoring the lives these iniquities most affect. Her inquiry into what it means to live in the Global South has yielded six books of lyrical nonfiction, most recently Fisherman's Blues: A West African Community at Sea, which investigates the porous boundary between the terra firma and the unfathomable, and is set in Senegal. She has written about wars on three continents and contributes to periodicals such as Granta, The New York Times, The Common, Guernica, Nautilus, and Foreign Policy. Presently a writer in residency at the Tulsa Artist Fellowship, she is at work on her first novel, about genocide, identity, and gentrification.
