Richard Cary’s Autobiography in Poems, titled I Once Was a Man from Nantucket, describes his journey as a young man seeking his poetic voice, finally finding himself as an old man on his back porch. A 1964 graduate of Carnegie Mellon Theater Arts, he moved year-round to Nantucket in 1970. In 1980 the Theater Workshop asked him to step in as artistic director for the beloved retiring Mac Dixon. In 1985 he founded Actors Theatre, serving as artistic director for twenty years, remembered for his one-man show And Now, Mark Twain!. Retiring in 2004 to Western NC, he has spent the last several years editing his autobiography in poems. It’s 750 pages long, 2 inches thick, and weighs in at 2 pounds.
